Mrs. Anne Bateman Ward, 76, of Nakina passed on Saturday, September 16, 2023 at her home. She was born March 5, 1947 in Danville, VA, the daughter of the late James Harold Bateman, Sr. and Margaret Dockery Bateman.
Anne Bateman Ward was born and raised in Danville, VA where she attended George Washington High School. She attended Radford University for her undergraduate and Master’s degrees. She taught Typing and Bookkeeping at Brookville High School in Lynchburg, VA. She loved water skiing with her family and friends at Smith Mountain Lake. She lived in South Boston, VA for 20 years as a tobacco farmer and the CFO of Ward’s Equipment, a Farm Equipment Dealership. In 2000, she moved to Nakina, NC where she co-owned and co-operated Ward’s One Stop in Shallotte, NC with her son. During the next 20 years she enjoyed golf with anyone who wanted to play with her. She also loved spending time at the beach and traveling. Anne was an avid NCSU fan and enjoyed attending football and basketball games as often as possible. She was a huge sports fan in general and supported her children, grandchildren, and the youth from Happy Home Baptist Church by attending as many of their sporting events as possible. She was a lover of animals and raised many spoiled dogs and cats plus several ducks and geese that lived on her pond. But her favorite activity was spending time with her family.
She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Carl Hugh Ward, Sr.; a son, Chuck Ward (Tracy) of Ocean Isle; two daughters, Betsy Ward Roop (Lee) of Apex; Christina Ward Rogers (Jason) of Nakina; a brother, James Harold Bateman , Jr. of Roanoke, VA; a sister, Judy Davlin of Street, MD; three grandchildren, Jack Ward (Rachel) of Pittsboro; Charlotte and Molly Roop, both of Apex.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a daughter, Julie Ward Brady.
Her family will receive friends on Thursday, September 21, 2023 at Happy Home Baptist Church at 2:00 pm and a service in her honor will follow at 3:00 pm with the Rev. Richard Collins officiating.
