Good evening, Meteorologist Christopher Cawley here with your weather update for Wednesday evening, November 20, 2024.
A strong cold front is approaching the I-95 corridor as I write this (8:36 PM Wednesday). This front will cross the area this evening and lead to tumbling temps and frosty mornings into the weekend.
High pressure will settle in by the weekend, and then slip off the coast early next week, allowing temperatures to warm back up above normal.
It will be breezy on Thursday, in addition to cold. Bright sunshine can be expected, but our highs will struggle to reach the 60-degree mark.
Very dry air will be in place Thursday night through the weekend. Thus, frost will be patchy to scattered. Dewpoint values will plunge deep into the 20s so that will work to preclude a widespread frost. So while that sounds great, it is almost a certainty that rural areas north and west of Whiteville will drop below freezing early Friday, early Saturday, and early Sunday. I wouldn’t be shocked to see a few car thermometers reading 28, 29, 30 degrees those mornings. Otherwise, on the whole our lows will be in the 32-36 degree range each of those three nights.
Bright sunshine will dominate through the weekends. That very dry air in place means little to no cloudiness, especially Friday-Sunday. Our highs on Friday might reach the mid 50s, if we’re lucky, and that would be normal for late January. Highs rebound into the 60s over the weekend, and then into the 70s early next week.
For last night’s report, I mentioned that Thanksgiving may be dry and warm; however, modeling now hints that a cold front may move through on Wednesday. There’s not a lot of moisture with this front, so we should stay dry, but Thanksgiving may be cooler than originally thought… temps in the 60s.
Tropics: Nothing going on whatsoever in the tropics, and there doesn’t appear to be anything on the horizon either.
