Special Weather Update Freeze Warning, November 29, 2024

Meteorologist Christopher Cawley here with a quick update.  A hard Freeze Warning is posted for early Saturday, 3 AM to 9 AM to be specific.  Temperatures across the county will drop to the upper 20s to around 30… some isolated spots may dip as low as 25 by sunrise on Saturday.  The longest growing season on record for the bi-state area will come to a sudden, screeching end tonight.

Prepare your home and vehicle for a prolonged period of very cold nighttime temperatures. For your vehicle, make sure your tires are inflated to the proper level, make sure your antifreeze/coolant level is topped off. Keep at least half a tank of gas to prevent moisture buildup in the tank. Top off your windshield washer with the proper fluid (not water!). Also check your battery and battery cables.

For your home, make sure all hoses are disconnected and that taps are turned off. If you have exposed/outdoor pipes, make sure they are insulated. Leave a faucet running (“drip, drip”) to prevent pipes from freezing. Also seal up any drafts/leaks you have around window- and door-frames.

Please don’t leave your pets outdoors over the next few nights, if at all possible.  Otherwise, make sure they have some kind of bedding and shelter they can be in.

Morning temperatures in the lower to middle 20s are a near-certainty through at least Wednesday morning, while afternoon highs will reach the upper 40s to around 50 Saturday, lower 50s Sunday, and then will be stuck in the mid 40s Monday and Tuesday.

Bundle up if you’re going to Legion Stadium tonight.  Temps will drop into the upper 30s by the end of the game.

The NWS will only issue the freeze warning one time, signaling the end of the growing season. There will be no further freeze warnings or frost advisories issued until spring 2025.
