Weather Update – Monday December 16, 2024

Greetings everyone, Meteorologist Christopher Cawley here with the weather update for Monday December 16, 2024.

There’s not much to talk about in the short-term with regards to weather, save for how unseasonably warm it’s going to be today through Wednesday. A high pressure ridge extending from New England southward through the Carolinas will push offshore and begin to weaken. A little trough exists along the coast and may trigger a shower or two along the coast if you’re traveling to Wilmington or Southport or North Myrtle.

Areas of fog this morning will quickly burn off leaving the county with partly to mostly sunny skies… more cloudiness in the far eastern portions of the county.

Temperatures on Monday jump well above seasonable normal values — highs will be in the lower to middle 70s across the county. The normal high for the Whiteville area is 57-59.

We will have continued dry and warm weather on Tuesday… highs Tuesday will reach the middle and upper 70s across the county with a good amount of sunshine.

A cold front starts to approach on Wednesday. We seem to be having a theme here of weekly frontal boundaries, and this will be no different. The frontal passage isn’t likely to occur until very late Wednesday evening or overnight into Thursday. A robust southwesterly flow keeps temps deep into a 70s with breezy southwest winds. The latest modeling shows quite a bit of uncertainty as to how much moisture will be with the front. I’m going with a 50/50 shot of showers, mainly later in the day on Wednesday. Rain showers are more likely during the late evening to overnight hours, with rapidly clearing skies after the front passes. No severe weather threat at this time.

Surface high pressure and dry weather will return Thursday through the weekend with progressively colder temps. Longer-term modeling suggests another true Arctic blast next Sunday through at least Christmas Day….. but absolutely nothing in terms of precipitation. The extended range modeling shows no weather systems here locally. Traveling to grandma’s house for Christmas should be trouble free… just cold.

Ok folks that will conclude today’s update. I hope you have a wonderful day, and as always, take care.
