Faye Benton Nance, 88, of Evergreen passed away on Wednesday, May 7, 2025 at Shoreland Health Care.

Faye graduated from Evergreen High School and attended East Carolina Teachers College now East Carolina University. She returned home to marry the love of her life George Buren Nance.

Faye was a lifetime member of Evergreen Methodist Church where she played the piano and organ even as the Alzheimer’s Disease began to affect her. Even playing after her 88th birthday. She served in every role with the church except being the Preacher, but she was known to keep him on his toes as well.

Faye had a love for children, family, friends and her community of Evergreen. After marriage she worked at Evergreen Elementary School where she assisted with the reading program for many years before stepping away to be a full-time homemaker after the birth of her youngest son Jason. Her love for her Evergreen community didn’t stop there as she supported her husband George in his significant involvement in the Evergreen Community ranging from the Evergreen United Methodist Church, Evergreen Fire Department, Lions Club, coaching of Dixie Youth Baseball, building homes, farming, softball and providing to the community from the large garden George always grew. One of the biggest compliments received by the family over the years was when families in the community were worried about putting food on their table, George and Faye would say “As long as they had food in their garden or their freezer not to worry about the next meal”.

After George’s death she worked at BB&T before again returning home to care for her grandchildren when needed.

Faye loved her sports as well. She loved watching her sons and grandchildren play sports, especially baseball. Faye rarely missed a game and if she did everyone wanted to know where she was.

She is survived by her children, Karen N. Hewitt (Legrande) of Whiteville, George Benton Nance (Lisa) of Chadbourn, Charles D. Nance (Andrea) of Ocean Isle Beach, Jason Corey Nance (Brittany) of Whiteville; sister, Linda B. Fields (Tommy) Evergreen; brother, Burney Benton (Mahala) of Evergreen; grandchildren, Kelli Greene (David), Megan Cox (Jay), Gerrad Nance, Chandler Nance, Emma Nance, Grace Nance, Leah Nance, George Nance, Dawson Spivey, McKenzie Spivey; great-grandchildren, Parker Greene, Karlen Greene, Levi Cox, and Avery Belle Cox.

The family would like to extend Special Thanks to the staff at Shoreland Healthcare for the love and care given during her stay, as in Faye’s normal way that became her home. Additionally, Liberty Hospice and all the prayers, acts of kindness from friends and the community.
