October 3, 1928 ~ May 25, 2025 (age 96)
Marie Ward Sellers, age 96, of Whiteville, NC, went to be with her Heavenly Father on Sunday, May 25, 2025, at Shoreland Healthcare. She was the daughter of the late Aren and Lillie Ward born on October 3, 1928 in Columbus County. In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her husband of 65 years; Okie Sellers, son; Charles Sellers, sisters; Mary W. White and Eva W. Powell, brothers; Solon Ward, Marshall Ward, Harvey Ward, John Henry Ward and Oliver Eason Ward (infant brother).
Marie graduated Whiteville High School in 1947. She received her nursing degree from Southeastern General Hospital School of Nursing in Lumberton, NC. At a later date, she received extensive education in Newborn Care at UNC Chapel Hill and Duke Medical Center in Durham, NC.
She was employed by Columbus County Hospital for over 40 years and was manager of the newborn nursery for over 30 of those years. Marie also taught Nurse Aide 1 classes at Southeastern Community College and Bladen Technical College. She served as past president of NC Nursing District 16.
Marie was a member of First Baptist Church, Whiteville, NC and Women’s American Legion Auxillary. She loved her church and her Pastors. She would often entertain them with a fresh cooked dinner and very much enjoyed their social time. She loved her Sunday School class and she prayed for each member every day. She studied her Bible, often quoting scriptures as she lived her life by these verses and daily prayer and devotion. Marie participated in her church’s honoring of “old” members, as she called it and she loved the worship service and meal in 2024.
Her piano was her love and she would often play for Diana, as they would sing together. She also had a passion for word search and reading as she would sail these books and ask for another.
She is survived by two daughters; Diana Lasater (John) and Linda Langdon (Ron), daughter in law; Patricia Sellers, 4 grandchildren; Chris and Curt Langdon, Sarah Eiler (Major William Eiler) and Adam Sellers (Stephanie Sellers), 2 great grandchildren; Charlotte Eiler and Logan Sellers, several nieces and nephews, brother in law; Dale Sellers (Peggy), sisters in law; Sylvia Whitehead (Johnny), Joyce Warwick, and Brenda Sellers.
Marie was very proud of her children, her grandchildren and great grandchildren and was very happy about all of their accomplishments. She so enjoyed sending birthday cards to so many of the family and it made her happy to receive them as well.
We love you, and will miss you dearly. May you be Lifted On Eagles’ Wings and Held In The Palm Of His Hands until we all meet again.
Final rites will be held at McKenzie Mortuary on Thursday, June 5, 2025, at 11:00 am with Dr. Wayne Brown, Dr. Chris Hillman, and Dr. Fred Senter officiating. Burial will be at Columbus Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 10:00 – 10:45 am prior to the service.
