Here’s today’s Bottom Line:

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas Holiday. It was certainly a warm one as our high (on my weather station in uptown Whiteville) reached 77 degrees.

We’ll be about 20 degrees colder today thanks to a “backdoor cold front” which has moved through the area.

A backdoor cold front is one that drops in from the north/east, instead of the typical west-to-east trajectory. Chilly humid northeasterly winds off the Atlantic should keep a good deal of cloudiness over the area today. Sometimes that’s hard to predict. We’ll be in a shallow wedge but I think we’ll trend to having more clouds than sunshine for today. Temps will likely be stuck in the upper 50s.

The wedge is very short-lived as low pressure passes off to our north tonight into Saturday. The clouds should pull away toward Saturday morning. The frontal boundary that moved through early this morning lifts back north, well to our north, allowing temps to jump back into the 70s.

The front sinks back to our south late Saturday night followed by a bit of high pressure. We’ll have cooler temps once again on Sunday but not like today… I think we’ll top off in the mid to upper 60s.

Then… CHANGE. A strong southwesterly flow becomes established late Sunday night into Monday ahead of a strong REAL cold front. Warm temps build back in on Monday prior to the frontal passage during the afternoon hours. We may have a few rain showers along the front, and some gusty winds as well.

Temps tumble down-down-down Monday night as cold air flows in on those gusty northwest winds. Temperatures on Tuesday will struggle to get out of the 40s… and we’ll have below-normal temperatures right into the New Year.
