Area Basketball Roundup: Pack Boys Win; Pack, Stallion Girls Triumph

Whiteville Boys 60, Red Springs 37

WHITEVILLE—Whiteville used a tough defense and a balanced attack to defeat Red Springs 60-37 in boys’ basketball Tuesday night.

The win puts the Wolfpack facing top seed West Bladen (18-6) in the second round of the Southeastern Basketball Tournament on Thursday night in Dublin. Whiteville held the Red Devils to 10 first half points on their way to building a 22-point lead at the break.

Ty’Lae Rose led the attack with 12 points and five assists. Trayvionne Williams added 11 points in the win. Both Corey Faison and Teron Legette posted double-doubles with 10 points and 10 rebounds each. The Wolfpack moves to 13-10 on the season. Red Springs finishes its season at 3-20.

WHITEVILLE—Jashai Robbs scored 12 points to lead the Lady Wolfpack to a 34-27 victory over Red Springs in the first round of the Southeastern Conference Tournament.

The Wolfpack will take on South Brunswick (16-2) in the second round on Wednesday (today). Whiteville’s defense set the tempo for the game, only allowing four first half points. The win moves the Wolfpack to 10-12 on the year. Red Springs finished its year at 3-19.

CALYPSO—North Duplin defeated West Columbus 50-13 in the first round of the Carolina Conference Tournament on Monday.

Abby Rose led the Rebels with 24 points and six rebounds while Maggie Brown added 11 points and eight rebounds. North Duplin (17-6) will face Lakewood (16-7) on Thursday night at Union High School. Demiya Powell led the Vikings with 11 points and Iyana Lowery grabbed 13 rebound in the loss. The Vikings finish their season at 2-17.

DUBLIN—Trinity Strickland scored 11 points to lead South Columbus past West Bladen in a tight contest on Tuesday night.

The Stallions led by as much as eight points in the fourth quarter but let the Knights cut the lead to only two late in the game. The win moves South Columbus (5-17) into the second round to face Fairmont (21-2) at Fairmont on Wednesday (today) in the second round of the Southeastern Conference Tournament. West Bladen (5-17) is on the bubble and will have to wait until the 3A pairings are announced to see if they will have another contest this season.
