Joan Lea Klingenschmidt McGougan, 57, of Lumber Bridge passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by her family on Sunday, April 26, 2026.
Joan was born on Sept. 17, 1968 to Edna Shannon Klingenschmidt and the late Robert Vincent Klingenschmidt.
After graduating high school, Joan received a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education from UNC – Pembroke. She worked for several years in education. Most recently she served as the church secretary at First Baptist Church Red Springs for 17 years.
Joan loved crafting and did a variety of crafts. She also was very skilled at planning events through the church.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband; James William “Bill” McGougan, daughter; Martha Shannon McGougan, son; William Duncan McGougan, mother; Edna S. Klingenschmidt, brothers; Wayne Klingenschmidt (Ruth), Roger Klingenschmidt (Sharon), Bill Klingenschmidt (Suwanna), sister; Diane Ballard (Bob), and several nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, at 2 p.m. at Red Springs First Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the McGougan Family Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1–1:45 p.m. prior to the service.
