James Elbert Piver, age 83, of Whiteville, died Tuesday, November 2, 2021, at Lower Cape Fear LifeCare.

James “Buck” Elbert Piver was born on October 24, 1938 in Whiteville, to the late James Harry Piver Sr. and Linnie Mae Ward Piver. 

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his daughters; Debra Lynn Dwelly and Anita Marie Piver, four brothers; James Harry Piver Jr, Jerry Talmidge Piver, Hubert Piver and Mitchell Ray Piver, and two sisters; Virginia Dare Taylor and Margarete LaRue Vicks, and a grandson; David Willard Butler.

He is survived by his wife; Lila Frances Anderson Piver, a daughter Dianna Louise Piver, a stepson; David Eugene Butler, two granddaughters; Bonnie Gene Butler and Hannah Lynn Piver, two grandsons; Bradley Carlton Dwelly and Michael James Piver, a great grandson; Mason Nathaniel Butler-Cortez, two great granddaughters; Olivia Harper Butler and Raylynn Marie Hope Duncan, four sisters; Evelyn Carol Surles, Marie Elizabeth Ward, Ramona Ann Puckett, and Vera Mae Simmons, and one brother; Bobby Dean Piver.

He was Masonic Worshipful Master of Roe Fulkerson Lodge #209 F&AM 1993 of Hollywood, Fl, A Noble of the Mystic Shrine in Mahi Temple of Miami, FL, a member of the Carpenter’s Union of Florida and North Carolina. 

Buck was a Veteran of the Coast Guard. He was a Great, God fearing man, full of family pride. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, cookouts, Miami Dolphin’s football, Nascar racing, Mrs. P’s sweet tea and spending time with his family.  He took pride in helping his neighbors during times of need. He always took care of his neighbor’s houses first during many hurricane preparations and always smoked them turkeys during the holidays.  He and his best friend Charley Davenport, had an annual Christmas decoration competition that put his house in the newspaper on more than one occasion. He enjoyed working in the garden and took great pride in his yard. He is cherished by those that knew him with love and respect. He will be missed dearly but not forgotten.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, November 6, 2021, at McKenzie Mortuary Chapel at 2:00 pm with Rev. Darryll Hester officiating.  Burial will follow at Ward Cemetery, Mooney Ford Rd., Nakina, with Masonic Rites.
