Trustee Herman Thomas Ward 78 of Whiteville transitioned into eternal rest on December 1, 2021.

On December 1, 2021, our beloved Herman Thomas “Uncle Pete” Ward transitioned to be with the Lord at Columbus Regional Hospital. He was born on September 14, 1943, in Columbus County to the late George Ward, Jr. and Zaner Davis Ward. He is preceded in death by his siblings Novella Ward Whitaker, Marie Yates Davis Umstead, Cephas Vander Ward Sr, Wynn Lee Ward, and Mattie V. Ward.
On August 12, 1978, he married Joyce D. Shipman, and together they have four children. Herman accepted Christ at an early age and was a member of Mt. Moriah Baptist Church. He was a faithful disciple and served in various capacities over the years; Male Choirs, Trustee, Chair of the Trustee Board, and in 2013 he was awarded an award as Mt. Moriah’s Man of the Year. Herman graduated from Westside High School in Chadbourn, North Carolina, in 1962. He was employed at Food Lion, where he retired after many years of dedicated service.
He leaves his faithful wife of 44 years, Joyce S. Ward of the home; son Rodney E. Shipman (Meeka) of Fayetteville, NC; daughters: Erika T. Ward and Krystle M. Ward, both of Raleigh, NC, and Shauna L. Ward of Concord, NC. Sister: Evelyn Blackmon of Lancaster, SC.
Grandchildren: Daquan McDaniel, JaQuan J. McDaniel, Jayla T. McDaniel, Kennedi M. Ward, and Jamirian E. Shipman; Great-grandchildren: Aubree R. McDaniel and Kannon I. Hunt.Godson: Craig Yates, and special cousin Tilman Inman, Jr.
Herman leaves to cherish his memory of longtime friend Larry Mayes. A special niece and nephew, Vanessa and Walter Ward, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
