Alfred Edgar Smith, age 89, went home to be with Jesus on Monday, September 19, 2022 at New Hanover Regional Medical Center with his loving family and pastor surrounding him. He was born in Columbus County on March 26, 1933, the son of the late Isdell Grady and Olive Janie Ellis Smith. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by sisters, Lucille Smith Rhodes, Mary Smith and Mildred Smith Barefoot.
He served his country in the United States Army in the Eighth Infantry Division. He went on to work at International Paper Company for over 48 years. Alfred was a faithful member of White Marsh Baptist Church. He was ordained as a deacon in 1963 under the ministry of Rev. Wiley Rutledge. Alfred served as Sunday School teacher, music director, musician, and usher as well as pulpit search committee member.
Left to cherish his memories are his wife; Alease Thompson Smith, four sons; Alfred Dale Smith (Peggy) and Barry Dean Smith both of Whiteville, NC., Ronald Gene Smith of Lumberton, NC, and Darrell Keith Smith of Fuquay Varina, NC, four grandsons; Matthew Smith (Tiffany) of Goodlettsville, TN, Andrew Smith (Amey) of Santa Fe, TX, Timothy Smith (Ashley) of Raleigh, NC and Jonathan Smith of Columbia, NC, one granddaughter; Jamie Smith Harris (Eric) of Wilmington, NC, six great granddaughters; Madison Macy and Lexxi Smith of Tennessee, Jordyn and Addisyn Smith and Zoey Hrncir of Texas, two brothers; Arnold Smith and Jimmy Smith, three sisters; Hazel Rooks, Carolyn Bellamy and Dorothy Smith.
His homegoing service will be graveside on Friday, September 23, 2022, at 2:00 pm in Flynn Cemetery with Rev. Timmy Locklear officiating. Visitation will follow the service.
Pallbearers are Matthew Smith, Andrew Smith, Timothy Smith, Jonathan Smith, Steve Barefoot, Jerome Rooks, Lee Thompson, and Joshua Glover.
