Blood donations in the U.S. dropped dramatically during COVID-19. A fresh unit will only hold up for six weeks before plasma starts to deteriorate. As a result, the Red Cross declared a national blood supply crisis earlier this year.

Columbus County will have three opportunities to replenish the lifesaving liquid in the coming weeks.

Southeastern Community College will be hosting the mobile Blood Connection blood drive on Thursday, Sept. 8, from 10:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. All donors will receive a $20 eGift card. The vehicle will be parked out front of Building A. SCC is located at 4564 Chadbourn Highway in Whiteville.

Grace Episcopal Church with the Lutherans of Christ the King will also be having a blood drive on Thursday from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. You can make an appointment ahead of time by visiting www.redcrossblood.org or by calling 1.800.733.2767. Please arrive well hydrated and with a picture identification. The church is located at 105 South Madison Street in Whiteville.

Whiteville Police Department will be having a community blood drive on Thursday, Sept. 15 from 1- 6 p.m. The event will be held at Vineland Station located at 701 South Madison Street. For more information about how you can donate, contact WPD at 910.642.5111.
