Peggy J. Smith Cox Hunt

January 7, 2024

In loving memory of Peggy J. Smith Cox Hunt of Riegelwood, NC, a cherished mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, and friend, who peacefully entered her heavenly home surrounded by family on January 7, 2024. She was born on January 1, 1934, in a home on the beloved family farm in Columbus County to the late Joseph Pearl Smith and his wife Hattie High Smith. Peggy was the widow of Ronald Travis “Sam” Hunt. Sam always said that Peggy was his soul mate, and together they enjoyed 64 years of matrimony. They are now reunited in the presence of our Lord.

Peggy was known by all as a devoted wife, mother, and a very caring person. She helped many people along her path as she passed through life and had a profound impact on the lives of those around her. Her devotion to the community led her to volunteer at the local hospitals and work as a substitute teacher, where she enjoyed getting to know the students. Peggy was a 1952 graduate of Whiteville High School and furthered her education at Miller Motte Business College. She was a long-time member of Riegelwood Baptist Church.

Peggy was gifted in many areas and could do anything she set her mind to. She had a great sense of humor and enjoyed having fun. Spending time with her family was her favorite thing to do in life, which she did as much as possible. She relished fond memories of her childhood and times spent with family and friends. Peggy will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of getting to know her.

She leaves behind treasured memories with her daughter Nancy Nipper (David) of Wilmington, NC, son Don Hunt (Corinne) of Florence, SC, and son Ronnie Hunt (Mary Lynne) of Wilmington, NC; grandchildren Jason Cox (Carrie), Johnny Nipper (Mary), Reed Hunt (Julia), Michael Nipper (Ashley), Carsten Hunt (Eden), Leah Parrot (Tyler), Xander Hunt (Anna), Smith Hunt, Anna Michael Hunt, Gretchen Beauchamp, Rieman Beauchamp and great-grandchildren Ethan Cox, Avery Cox, Allison Hunt, Corinne Parrot, Samuel “Little Sam” Wells Hunt, Ty Parrot, and Elsie Hunt. Peggy loved them all very dearly.

In addition to her mother, father, and husband Sam, she was preceded in death by her son William Rockwell “Rocky” Cox, Jr., infant son Tony Ray Hunt, infant daughter Joy DeAnn Hunt, and three brothers: Joseph P. Smith, Jr., Kenneth Smith, and infant Frank Smith. Also, preceding her were five sisters: Doris Smith, Francis Harrelson, Betty Daughety, Jean McKeel, and Rose Thomas. She was previously widowed by William Rockwell Cox, Sr. She was also preceded by her loyal dog Kandi.
