Summer is a busy time for highway crews across the state, including the Columbus County area.
The N.C. Dept. of Transportation said several projects may require detours or delays in the coming weeks.
Old Lumberton Road near Research Drive is closed until September 8 for a bridge replacement. Both lanes of the road will be closed between Red Store and Peacock roads.
In Bladen County, Mercer Mill Brown Marsh Road between Clarkton and Elizabethtown is closed near Dewitt Goodwin road for multiple drain tile replacements. Those are expected to be completed July 19.
Also next door, Elwell Ferry is expected to reopen July 15, according to the Department of Transportation. The ferry between Carvers and Kelly in Bladen County has been closed for repairs and due to low water in the Cape Fear River.
Motorists heading to and from Wilmington from Columbus will see some delays near Sandy Creek. One of two lanes on U.S. 74/76 eastbound is scheduled to close next week for utility construction.
A state highway contractor will close the lane east of N.C. 87 (Maco Road) outside Sandy Creek from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. July 25-26 for utility work on the side of the highway.
Drivers should slow down and proceed cautiously through this work zone during those two days.
