Proms are happening at schools all over the place, but it isn’t just the youngsters putting on their dancing shoes. The Columbus County Department of Aging (DOA) will be hosting the ‘Wisteria Lane Senior Prom’ on April 24, and this year an entire royal court will take center stage.
Summer Britt, event coordinator for the center, said they are doing things a little differently this year regarding the nomination of a prom king and queen. Instead of announcing nominees via social media and having attendees put votes in a ballot box, the DOA will be letting each senior center pick their own belle and beau of the ball to represent them.
“On the night of prom, we will have a moment to introduce, recognize, and crown the seven prom kings and queens,” said Britt.

She said the most humbling part of the selection is the lasting memory that each of the royals will remember.
“For some of our attendees, they didn’t have a prom or were unable to go. This is giving them the moment most of us have experienced at least once in our lives, but for them the very first time,” Britt expressed.
The ‘Wisteria Lane Senior Prom’ will take place at the Vineland Station Depot on April 24 from 4:30-7 p.m. Tickets are $15 each and cover the price of admission and dinner. The depot can be found at 701 South Madison Street in Whiteville. For more information about purchasing tickets, contact a senior center near you.
