LAKE WACCAMAW—The Coach Vinston Thorpe Era got off to a solid start as The East Columbus Gators defeated Green Sea Floyd 12-8 in the season opener for both squads.
The Gators held the Trojans on a fourth and goal with 4:14 left in the fourth quarter after the quarter after Green Sea Floyd drove the ball 80 yards down the field, only for the drive to stall inside the 10-yard line.
The Trojans started strong out the gate when sophomore quarterback Aaron Flowers toted the ball 60 yards down the field on the third play of the game to the East Columbus 14 yard line. Flowers proceeded to find PJ Stephens in the end zone for a 14 yard touchdown pass to put Green Sea up 8-0 early in the contest.
The Gators got on the scoreboard in the second quarter with a eight yard run by Julian Murray to cut the lead to 8-6. East Columbus took the lead with 14 seconds left to halftime when quarterback Eli Walker tossed a 32-yard pass to TJ Hudson to put East Columbus 12-8 at the half.
The second half was full of exciting plays and drives on the field for both teams but didn’t produce any points. The last point came as the Green Sea Floyd Trojans moved the ball over 12 minutes and 22 plays to stall inside the 10-yard line. East Columbus (1-0) will travel to Rocky Point and face Heide Trask (0-1) on Aug. 28. Green Sea Floyd will travel to Loris, S.C.
