Nancy Etheridge Varney

Nancy Etheridge Varney, 61, of Crusoe Island, N.C.,  passed peacefully at Angel House from complications of cancer with family by her side and Elvis in her ear.

Nancy was the daughter of Hattie Long Etheridge and Levi “Rowe” Etheridge of Crusoe, who preceded her in death.

She is survived by her husband of 32 years, Michael,  her daughter, Sarah, and her Sister Willadean (Jackie) Etheridge.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Munroe Etheridge; and sisters Betty Ann Gore and Mary Elizabeth Etheridge.

Nancy graduated from Nakina High School in 1984 and worked as a hair stylist and clerk at various Whiteville establishments, eventually landing at Columbus Regional Medical Center. There she caught the eye and stole the heart of a certain emergency physician.  They married in 1994, followed by a daughter in 1999.

Nancy will be remembered for her Southern country charm and humor with an unparalleled talent for telling of tales, especially those of her growing up in Crusoe.

Nancy achieved a local celebrity status by starting the social media page, “Columbus County Memories”.  She scoured yearbooks, private collections, and public records for pictures of people and places of Columbus County that over ten thousand followers viewed daily.

She was very proud of her community of Crusoe Island, especially of the colorful and talented people therein.

Nancy was also adept at genealogy, which led to her tracing multitudes of family trees, creating multiple albums of data.  She became the resource of first choice when anyone was curious of the ancestry.

Memorial services will be performed at Peacock Funeral Home in Whiteville with visitation preceding the service.  There will be no graveside service. The date and time will be announced later today.

In lieu of flowers, donations in her name to the Angel House Hospice Care Center or the Columbus County Animal Shelter are requested.
