Folks near the corner of Canal Cove Road and Wooded Acres Road at Lake Waccamaw are waking up to the sound of beeps and clunks of heavy machinery as the Wildlife Resources Commission installs a paved parking lot for boaters and fishermen.
The project is expected to take two to three months to complete, according to the Chief of the Engineering Division of the NCWRC Gary Gardener.
The property was purchased in May of 2020 by the WRC from the Heath family. The Heaths allowed public parking on the undeveloped field for many years next to the large pond across from the landing, but they felt it was best to finally sell the small stretch of land to the commission so they can install a formal parking area.
“The parking lot will have 49 vehicle with trailer parking spots and 10 single vehicle parking spots,” said WRC Public Relations Manager Mindy Wharton. The new development will help with overcrowding and double parking during the summer months when tourist season is in full swing at Lake Waccamaw.
