Annie Mae Ward Cartrette, age 86, left her earthly home of Brunswick, NC to join her husband, John Pinkney Cartrette in heaven for Christmas.
Annie Mae was born February 5, 1935 in the middle of the Great Depression to Cutler and Amanda Elizabeth “Mamie” Ward. Annie Mae was raised with 10 brothers and sisters near Nakina. Annie Mae Ward met John Pinkney Cartrette while she was working as a salesgirl in downtown Whiteville. She sold John a pair of boots, wrote letters to him while he fought in the Korean War and married him March 14, 1958.
Together they had two beautiful children and become a foundation for their community. They raised their children in a happy, Christian home, making sure to always use the love of Christ and each other as a guide. Annie Mae was the glue that held our family together. Her laugh was contagious, and her light radiated around her. She was a beacon to the neighborhood children (they always knew where to get lemonade and cookies) and she was a haven to any organization or individual in need. She loved going to church, never saw a flaw in anyone and she was always the kind of woman that was a friend. She will be missed terribly by her family.
She is preceded in death by her parents, nine siblings, and her husband, John Pinkney Cartrette. Her family that continues with her legacy include: Johnny Vegas Cartrette (son), Tracy Lynn (daughter-in-law) and John Cole Cartrette (grandson) of Monroe, NC. Teresa Ann Cartrette (daughter) of Chadbourn, NC. Tessa Anne-Cartrette Cheek (granddaughter), Robert Kyle Cheek (grandson-in-law), Terran Michelle Cheek (great-granddaughter), Callum Robin Cheek (great-grandson) of Bolivia, NC. Lastly, Chelsey Hunter Cartrette of Chadbourn, NC and her boyfriend, Kyle Hunter Watts of Ash, NC.
They gave her love, time and affection and lifted her through the last years of her life.
The family will hold a small, private service to honor the life of Annie Mae. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to your local hospice.
