Sarah Winfield Icard was born in the Rock House on Winfield Road in Polkton, North Carolina August 17, 1921. She married childhood sweetheart, Jack Icard and was a loving mother to three children John, Harriet and Charles.
Sarah spent most of her adult life in Evergreen where she was known for her beautiful yard. Even into her 90’s she could be seen planting colorful flowers, pulling weeds, or driving the lawnmower to make sure everything was well manicured. Summers, her backyard garden was filled with tomatoes, corn, green beans and squash which she willingly shared with friends. To her it was just part of being a good neighbor in a community that she loved.
Sarah was an avid sports fan especially when it came to Duke Basketball and East Carolina Football. She also had a passion for game shows which helped keep her mind sharp. She never stopped living a full life, flying on her first airplane in her 80’s, attending a Duke game in Cameron Indoor at 86, and driving her car until she was 97. This year she continued her tradition of tending to a few tomato plants at her retirement community.
Last year she celebrated her 100th birthday twice. In Polkton, generations of family returned which gave her much joy. All in attendance were amazed at her sharp mind and wit as she easily traced the family tree to determine who belonged to who or answered questions about life when she was growing up. In Evergreen during the pandemic, she watched from her driveway as two firetrucks and neighbors provided a celebratory parade.
Those who knew her loved her kindness, generosity and charming personality.
Always humble, she would never admit that she lived an extraordinary life, but for those fortunate enough to know her she was an inspiration.
Sarah Winfield Icard went home to be with the Lord and Jack on June 11th, 2022. She is survived by her son Charles and his wife Laura, daughter Harriet Hudson, two grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
A celebration of life will be held at 3:00 pm Wednesday, June 15th at Evergreen Baptist Church. The family will receive friends at 2:00 pm prior to the service. Interment will follow in the Columbus Memorial Park.
