For a child, the love of reading may start at home, but Columbus County libraries have launched the “Oceans of Possibilities” summer reading program to keep youngsters turning pages during their break.
Each branch in the county has set aside time for children to not only hear stories and read, but to also do arts, crafts, games, and other activities with a group of their peers. There are no sign-ups required, and all programs are free of charge.
“We want to keep kids engaged in reading and keep them informed while they are out of school,” said Rhonda Collins of the Carolyn T. High Memorial Library. “We also try to incorporate information on programs we have going on in the library into activities.”
Collins and her colleagues will host kids 5-12 years old every Monday at 10 a.m. at the Whiteville branch through Aug. 1. The East Columbus Library will run the program until Aug. 2, on Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m., for ages 3-9 years old, and Lake Waccamaw’s Rube McCray will open their doors to young readers on Wednesdays at 9:30 a.m. until July 27.
The western end of the county will follow suit at the Chadbourn Community Library on Wednesdays at 2 p.m. Their program is geared towards little ones 4-6 years old. Fair Bluff Library invites youngsters ages 6-11 to also come out on Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. Both branches will run “Oceans of Possibilities” until July 27.
