Marlisa Small’s ministry, Bold and Beautiful Wigs for Cancer in Little River, held their annual golf tournament fundraiser on Saturday, Aug. 27, at Tidewater Golf Course in North Myrtle Beach.
“It was a great turnout. I thank everyone who come out to support us,” said Small.
Small, a 32-year cervical cancer survivor, started the organization in 2010, and her ministry gives out brand new free wigs to chemo patients. Ties for Bold and Beautiful Wigs for Cancer reach far and wide, and though the price tags can range anywhere from $180-$600 per piece, the service costs nothing for the recipient.
The Donayre Center in Whiteville refers women and children from Columbus County to Small for help.
She said the event brought in over $30,000, and every penny of it will go directly toward purchasing hair pieces. The money will come in handy because her organization is currently the only non-profit in Horry and surrounding counties who offer wigs for cancer patients completely free of charge.
Though the golf tournament was one of the most successful that the organization has had in recent years, Small is still concerned that the money will only stretch so far.
“Even though the organization raised a lot of money Saturday, it will go quickly because the area hospitals and cancer centers in North and South Carolina refer all their cancer patients to us. We turn no one away,” she said.
It’s also not uncommon for Small to speak to someone halfway across the world who has reached out to the ministry and send them a wig to wear as they undergo cancer treatment.
The next fundraiser for Bold and Beautiful Wigs for Cancer will be on Saturday, Oct. 8. The ministry is currently selling tickets for their 80’s themed dinner boat cruise.
