As many families prepare for a big Thanksgiving week, the Backpack Buddies Ministry is making sure that 1,000 children will at least have food for the long holiday weekend.
Rev. Dave Heller said that volunteers are needed for Monday’s Backpack Buddies Packing Party at 7 p.m. The packing parties are held at the Columbus Baptist Association office at 208 S. Thompson St., Whiteville.
Hundreds of children ion the county face a lack of food when they are not in school, according to the ministry. Backpack Buddies distributes bags of easily-prepared food to students who might not have a good meal when they’re at home.
Monday’s packing party is one of the largest yet – volunteers have more than 1,000 backpacks to fill to reach students in all 18 schools, including the county and city systems and the charter school.
