The Good News for July 5

Saturday is the Freedom Festival at the Veterans Memorial Park on U.S. 701 south of Whiteville. There will be yard salers, vendors, live entertainment, kids activities, and food. The event is from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. As always, the Field of Flags is flying at the park, so get out there and enjoy this display of American pride.

More flags are flying in the county as well. The Flags of Flemington at Lake Waccamaw are on display through Monday. The flags are flown on every patriotic holiday. In addition to historical flags of our country, there are flags honoring the military, first responders and more. The display starts at the depot museum and extends to town hall.

You might have seen the flags Thursday if you stopped by the Lake fire department for the Jimmy Stanley Memorial Hot Dog sale. Fire Chief Ron Sasser said the event was a resounding success, and more than $4,000 was raised.

You can help out another fire department Saturday. Nakina VFD will hold a boot drop Saturday at the intersection of NC 904 and 905 from 10-2. The department will also hold a car wash July 27.
