News Briefs for December 8, 2024

While we will get some badly needed rain this week, wildfire activity is picking up statewide. The Forest Service said there were 236 wildfires during October, 282 wildfires during November and so far in December, about nearly 200.  Fire danger is very high. Officials are asking everyone to forego any outdoor burning and to wait until there is substantial rain.

Keep an umbrella handy for today through Wednesday as the chances are fairly certain we will receive some much-needed rainfall across the area.

The driver of a heavy pickup  left a trail of debris in South Whiteville that ended with a standoff at the Murphy gas station on Powell Boulevard Friday. The truck struck several vehicles before smashing several gas pumps round 6:00 p.m.
The driver reportedly barricaded himself in the store for a short time. He was taken into custody without injury. Whiteville Police were assisted by Columbus and Bladen deputies and the Chadbourn Police.

The warming station at Fact of Life Church in Whiteville is once again open, from 7:00 p.m. until 7:00 a.m. through Tuesday. Organizers are asking for volunteers to help distribute flyers to homeless people in need of shelter from the 20 degree temperatures. Call 910.918.4531 for more information.
