Dolly Parton Library Signups End

New registrations for the Dolly Parton Imagination Library (DPIL) will end Feb. 1.

“This was a difficult decision, and we understand how it may affect families hoping to sign up,” Columbus County Partnership for Children (CCPC) said in a press release. “Rest assured, children already enrolled in DPIL by Feb. 1 will continue to receive one high-quality, age-appropriate book every month, delivered directly to their home, until their fifth birthday.”
The free program was founded by country music icon Dolly Parton, who is a staunch advocate of childhood literacy. Parton founded the foundation, which provides a book a month through the mail to all enrolled children under the age of five.
Families participating in the program report an increase in children reading on a daily basis from 45 to 67 percent.
DPIL through Smart Start was too successful, as the Smart Start Network has reached its funding capacity to assist with the DPIL. The foundation uses local groups to facilitate the program.
“The Smart Start Network is actively working to secure additional public and private funding to ensure DPIL continues to serve children in every North Carolina community,” the release said. “With increased support, we are hopeful that registration for DPIL in Columbus County will reopen, allowing us to reach even more children and families.”
CCPC asked that parents share their stories about the impact of DPIL to gloria.riddick@columbussmartstart.org.
Personal testimonials help demonstrate the program’s value and can lead to increased funding, they said.
Free books will still be available through the CCPC Early Learning and Family Resource Center on West Main in Whiteville.
“Continue reading with your young children” the press release said. “Together, we can ensure that more children in North Carolina grow up with a love of reading and the tools they need for future success. We are so grateful for your continued support as we work to expand the reach of DPIL.”
