Forest Service crews are still on the scene of a massive wildfire in the western part of the county. Firefighters from a half-dozen departments worked to protect homes along Mangum Road that were threatened by the blaze. Most of the work today is mopping up hot spots, but there are still heavy smoke conditions in the area.

 

Representative Brenden Jones called out former governor Roy Cooper and the N.C. Office of Resilience and Recovery in an X post Wednesday for failure to properly manage millions of dollars in relief for victims of Hurricanes Matthew and Florence.

 

The House Oversight Committee on Thursday continued hearings from state leaders  who must provide what they do, how they do it, and how they measure their success. Critics have accused the General Assembly of pushing the “DOGE” technique that President Donald Trump is using to cut the size of the federal government and save tax dollars.
