Dispute Leads to Shots, Arrest

Assault and false imprisonment charges have been pressed against a man who allegedly shot at two teenagers for parking on the shoulder of the roadway.

Waylen J. Cartrette, 74, of 1093 Feed Mill Road, Chadbourn, was released on a $1,000 bond in the incident. He was charged with assault by pointing a gun and false imprisonment.

The report said Owen Fowler and a 17-year-old juvenile stopped on the shoulder at the intersection of Peacock and Feed Mill roads after a door came open on the back of Fowler’s work truck. Fowler and the youth secured the door and continued toward Williamson’s Country Kitchen.

While they were parked at the business the victims said, Cartrette blocked the truck and confronted Fowler about parking on Cartrette’s property. Cartrette left after an argument,  and was waiting at the intersection when Fowler and the juvenile returned a short while later.

Cartette allegedly fired at least two rounds as they drove through the intersection, the report said. Fowler and the youth fled the scene and contacted Matt Barnes, who called 911.

The report said that Cartrette initially denied shooting the weapon toward the two, but finally admitted to shooting twice in the air. He was arrested and charged.
