More than 2,800 customers were without power in Columbus County this afternoon due to equipment malfunctions, according to Duke Progress Energy. The utility said service should be completely restored by this evening. Most of the outages were between Whiteville and Chadbourn, while around 400 were reported in Hallsboro and Lake Waccamaw.

 

A pit bull pup saved from a structure fire in Whiteville Monday is recovering at home. The canine was crated inside 605 N. Lee Street when firefighters arrived. Lt. Marquise Blanks of the WFD and Lt. Scott Moody of the Whiteville Police hauled the crate outside, extracted the dog and gave it oxygen.

 

North Carolina poultry has been designated High Path Avian Influenza-free by the World Organization for Animal Health. This designation means that the state can resume exports and international trade for poultry products.
