Donald Leroy Leggett, 83, of Evergreen, met his Lord and Savior on Tuesday, April 29, 2025.
Donald was born on May 13, 1941, son of the late Roy Duncan Leggett and Mamie Lee Shaw Leggett. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by an infant brother.
Donald graduated from Evergreen High School in 1959. He was a graduate of Campbell University with a B.S. in Mathematics. He went on to earn a Masters of School Administration from East Carolina University. He served as a teacher for 15 years and as principal of Evergreen Elementary School for 16 years.
Donald was a life-long member of Evergreen Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and in various other capacities. He was an avid gardener and enjoyed sharing the fruits of his labor. He was affectionately called “The Collard Man” by many. Donald loved his family and many friends.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 60 years, Helen; his daughter, Mary Donna Strickland (Ronnie); his son, Donald Craig Leggett (Amanda); his grandchildren, Byron Craig Leggett (Summer), Jonathan Cole Strickland (Whitney Baxley), Evan Cade Strickland (Kailey), and Bradley Craig Leggett; great-grandson, Eli Brooks Leggett. He is also survived by numerous cousins.
Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 AM on Friday, May 2, 2025 at Evergreen Baptist Church, with burial to follow in the Evergreen Memorial Cemetery (Shaw Cemetery).
Visitation will be held from 6:00 until 8:00 on Thursday evening at Worthington Funeral Home in Chadbourn.
