‘Black Box’ Leads to Chase, Drug Arrest

A traffic violation and a black metal box commonly used for narcotics transportation led to the arrest of a Hallsboro man May 1.
Jemel Antwan Thompson, 33, was held under $155,000 secured bond, according to detention center reports. He was charged with fleeing to elude arrest, possession of a firearm by a felon, possession of a stolen firearm, trafficking in opiates, possession with intent to sell and deliver cocaine, carrying a concealed weapon, resisting an officer, misdemeanor marijuana possession, driving while license revoked, and violating parole. His address was listed as 261 Honey Hill Rd.
The report said that a deputy saw a black Volkswagen commit a traffic violation near the Hill’s store on Powell Boulevard in Whiteville, and a check of the registration showed the  owner of record had a suspended license. The deputy stopped the Volkswagen in the grocery store parking lot.
When he approached the vehicle, the report said, the deputy spotted a “black magnetic box” on the passenger seat. The type of box is sometimes used to hide narcotics, the report said.
Thompson reportedly became irate when asked to step out of the vehicle, and refused to comply. While the deputy was attempting to detain Thompson, he drove away, crossing several lanes of traffic and fleeing to North memory Street, where he exited the vehicle and began running.
The deputy used a Taser to detain Thompson, the report said.
The report said the box contained a Taurus G3C handgun, multiple Suboxone strips, powdered cocaine, crack cocaine, and marijuana, along with $534 in cash.
Thompson was treated at the scene by Whiteville Rescue, and jailed under multiple charges. His car was towed.
