Friday is Peace Officers Memorial Day. The Columbus County Sheriff’s Office will be holding a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. at 801 Jefferson Street in Whiteville to honor the twelve local law enforcement officers who died in the line of duty. The public is welcome.

Local law enforcement held a private wreath laying and memorial service last night at the grave of Trooper Kevin Conner, who was shot to death here during a traffic stop in 2018, and Tabor City Officer Shane Miller, who died in a car crash during a criminal pursuit in 2004, on his first shift as a policeman.

Saturday will be the bridge naming and dedication for the Old Lake Overpass bridge. The ceremony will be held at the Waccamaw Siouan Tribal Center at 7239 Old Lake Road. The bridge over U.S. 74 is being named in honor of the tribe. Events start at 2:00 p.m.
