A state food benefit program has sent out $121 million in preloaded debit cards to help families with dependent children. The SUN Bucks cards will activate May 22. Each is worth $120. Parents of eligible children will be notified by mail. Several more rounds of SUN Bucks will go out this summer.
Elwell Ferry will be closed until May 20 due to high water. The ferry crosses the Cape Fear River between Carvers and Kelly in Bladen County.
On May 31 the Columbus Disaster Preparedness Expo at the fairgrounds. Multiple agencies and organizations will be on hand to provide information about assistance before, during and after hurricanes and other natural disasters. The event is from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., and admission is free.
