A twin engine plane crashed north of Old Dothan Road Saturday (today), killing two people.
Sheriff Bill Rogers said the crash occurred around 1 p.m.
The six seat private plane was headed from Spartanburg to Myrtle Beach when it fell off radar near the state line, Rogers said.
The sheriff’s office, Highway Patrol and Wildlife Resources Commission, along with Tabor City and Nakina fire departments. Whiteville Emergency Services UAV team deployed along with personnel from Horry County, and Columbus County emergency Services. Roger said a deputy riding with a private helicopter pilot from Tabor City found the wreckage.
“It was in a very thickly wooded area,” Rogers said. “They spotted the crash site from the air when they saw a single broken tree.”
Debris was scattered across a long swath through the woods, Rogers said.
Search and recovery crews had to battle more than thick vegetation — heavy rains moved in shortly after the crash, further complicating the search.
The crash site is being secured until the Federal Aviation Administration arrives to investigate.
