Here’s Today’s Bottom Line
A weakening frontal boundary will push slowly across the area today. This will bring scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms, especially this afternoon through about midnight tonight.
No severe thunderstorms are expected, but the storms are likely to be poorly organized, slow-moving, and producing copious rainfall. Model blends show an average of 1-2 inches of rain for the county through tonight; however, localized areas could receive quite a bit more rainfall, while others receive little, if any.
Columbus County is under a “marginal risk” for excessive rainfall today through this evening.
The front clears the coast early Thursday. I think there will be enough moisture left over that a renegade shower or thunderstorm remains possible Thursday. We’ll return to seasonable levels of heat on Thursday, with highs in the lower 90s.
High pressure takes hold for Independence Day through the weekend with … wait for it … LOWER HUMIDITY and temperatures just a touch below seasonal normal values. Enjoy it because the heat cranks back up early next week, along with a return to some thunderstorm chances.
TROPICAL OUTLOOK: A frontal boundary will cross our area Wednesday, and slowly, SLOWLY push off the coast Thursday into Friday. The front then stalls just offshore and starts to fade; however, models still hint that a tropical or subtropical low spins up somewhere on the front. The most likely area is just off the west coast of Florida; however, some of the global models point to a development off the Georgia/SC coast. The National Hurricane Center gives this area a 30% risk of development within 7 days.
Regardless of development, impacts here in Columbus County will likely be minimal, if anything at all.
