The Good News July 9-15, 2025

July started out with a bang, and the momentum will just keep going into August. There are still events to attend, good causes to donate to, and a movie to catch in Columbus this month. Be sure to check in every Wednesday morning for the Good News so you don’t miss out on what’s happening near you.

The Lake Waccamaw Depot Museum will hold a ‘Friday Railroad Dinner’ on July 11 at 6:30 p.m. at the facility. The theme and main course will be fried chicken. Bring your friends, family, neighbors and a covered dish to 201 Flemington Drive in Lake Waccamaw. Any donations made that evening will be distributed to the museum and the Friends of Rube McCray Memorial Library.

This Saturday, July 12, will be Watermelon Day at the Columbus County Farmers Market. From 8 a.m. – 1 p.m., there will be watermelon and lots of other produce, as well as 15 vendors to shop from. The market is open every Saturday at 132 Government Complex Drive in Whiteville.

The First Responder Basketball Tournament hosted by the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office on July 12 at 12 p.m. at West Columbus High School has been cancelled. The CCSO has requested that anyone who was planning to attend the event to please make a donation to the Families First organization instead.

The Boys and Girls Home of North Carolina got a generous donation last week from the Massey Hill Lions Club. Scott Stephenson gifted the organization at box truck from his business, D & S Express Delivery Logistics, for use on campus and to pick up larger donations.

It’s Christmas in July, and the Community Art Journey will be hosting a workshop for everyone’s favorite holiday on July 13 from 1-5 p.m. You can sign up to create your own 12 x 12 Christmas patterned barn quilt for $25, or you can paint an 18 x 18 for $50. For questions or to register for the workshop, call 910.625.8066.

Columbus County Library wants you to give the gift of life on Wednesday, July 16, from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. The facility will be sponsoring a blood drive with the Red Cross. Walk-ins are welcome, but you can sign up for an appointment by visiting www.redcrossblood.org. The library is located at 407 North JK Powell Boulevard in Whiteville.

The Columbus County Animal Protective Services will be bringing the community and animals at the shelter together for the ‘Paws, Music, and Moonlight’ event on Saturday July 19 starting at 7 p.m. There will be live music, local vendors, food, and plenty of furry friends up for adoption. Those interested donating decorations, being a vendor, or playing music that evening are asked to contact the APS by calling 910.641.3945 or send an email to animal.services@columbussheriff.com

Fair Bluff will be a busy place this month. They hosted their Red, White, and Blue Party for Independence Day weekend, but the fun doesn’t stop there. On July 22 at 6 p.m., the town will host an arts and crafts workshop at Second Hand Smiles and Delightful Do Dads. The cost is $25 per person, and signups will be accepted through July 18. Those interested in attending are asked to call Kathy Ashley at 910.840.4091. The store can be found at 981 Main Street, Suite 100.

The town’s annual Watermelon Festival will be on Saturday, July 26. The day will begin at 7 a.m. with watermelon contest registration and vendor setup. Alyssa Strickland will sing the ‘National Anthem’ at 8:55 a.m., and the parade will begin at 12:30 p.m. For the full list of festival events, visit  https://columbuscountynews.com/2025-fair-bluff-watermelon-festival/

If you’re up for a little outdoor movie, the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences at Whiteville will be showing “Mufusa: The Lion King” on July 25 at their next installment of Movies on Madison. The lawn will open at 7:30 p.m. for folks to learn about amazing animals who prowl at night, and the movie will be shown at 8 p.m. This is a family-friendly event, so no pets, coolers, alcohol, or smoking will be permitted. Refreshments will be available for purchase. NCMNS-W is located at 415 South Madison Street in Whiteville.

The Columbus Baptist Association is now accepting sponsorships for children for the fifteenth annual CBA Toy Store. The cost per child is $100, and the donation will help parents receive toys for their kid for Christmas. Your name will also appear on the banner at the CBA golf tournament fundraiser. To be a sponsor, visit www.columbusbaptistnc.org/donate and follow the prompts, or you can write a check and send it to Columbus Baptist Association, 208 South Thompson Street, Whiteville, N.C. 28472.

School is out for summer, but not quite out forever. That’s ok because the Columbus County Health Department will be hosting a feel-good event to help students get back into the swing of things. On August 8, the department will hold their “Back to School” celebration from 1-4 p.m. The afternoon will include games, prizes, free school supplies, and health information for the whole family. The facility can be found at 304 Jefferson Street in Whiteville.
