A frequent critic of the Bladen County Board of Education and former publisher of an online newspaper has been charged with murder.
Charlotte Brandy Smith, 45, of 307 Woodhouse Drive, Elizabethtown, was arrested in Montgomery County Wednesday and charged with first degree murder, according to court documents. The victim in the case is listed as her husband, Aaron Daine Smith.
Detectives and EMS were called to the Smith family home, where they found Daine Smith suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He died while being transported to an area hospital, police said.
Mrs. Smith was arrested in a traffic stop in the Troy area, according to the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office.
The Smiths were married for more than 20 years, and Daine Smith had a heating and air conditioning company. Mrs. Smith sold bladenonline.com to the Bladen Journal newspaper’s holding company, Champion Media, in April, according to both outlets.
She was a harsh and frequent critic of the Bladen County Board of Education, running for a seat on the board in 2022. She filed a complaint against the Elizabethtown City Manager for refusing to sign her petition to be on the ballot.
The State Bureau of Investigation and Bladen County Sheriff’s Office are assisting with the investigation, according to a press release from Elizabethtown police.
