A false claim of sexual assault led to the arrest of a local woman July 1.
Emma Paige Ward, 21, of 509 Fair Bluff Rd., Tabor City, was charged with a single count of making a false claim to law enforcement, according to warrants. She was released on a written promise to appear.
The sheriff’s office reported that Ward contacted deputies June 24 and said she had been sexually assaulted by a man she knew. Detectives interviewed both Ward and the male suspect, and reviewed “extensive text” messages between them before and after the encounter.
“The messages clearly indicated that both individuals agreed to meet,” the report said. When she was shown the evidence, the report said, Ward admitted that her initial statements about the incident were not true. She was taken into custody on the single charge.
