One man died when his motorcycle struck an SUV near Clarkton Sunday morning, and a firefighter en route to the wreck was injured in an unrelated crash.

Raykwan Jennell Davis rammed his Kawasaki motorcycle into the side of a 2013 GMC Equinox at the intersection of U.S. 701 Business and 701 Bypass at Clarkton, Sgt. J. Weissinger of the Highway Patrol said.

Dilena Jessup of Elizabethtown was traveling south on the Bypass when  she attempted to turn left. Davis was traveling north on his 2009 Kawasaki and collided with the SUV. Speed was a factor in the crash, the sergeant said. Jessup was airlifted to New Hanover Novant, and Davis was declared dead on the scene.

North Whiteville firefighter Donnie Coleman was responding to the call when he lost control of his truck and struck a tree. Coleman was ejected. He sustained serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Davis was the fourth road death in the county this year.
