Deputy Timothy Stewart was cited for failure to reduce speed, according to Sgt. J. Weissinger of the Highway Patrol. Stewart was reportedly responding to a call when the crash occurred. Stewart was heading west on Chadbourn Highway near the Whiteville Auto Auction when he failed to reduce speed and rear ended a 2005 Dodge truck driven by Harold Simmons of Chadbourn.
Mayors in Lake Waccamaw and Whiteville will face challengers in November, while some towns still don’t have a full slate of hopefuls for the municipal elections this fall. Filing for town and city offices ends Friday in Columbus County.
Whiteville and Chadbourn police departments are already planning community shindigs for ‘National Night Out’ on Aug. 5. Whiteville will hold their event from 6-8:30 p.m. in the City Hall parking lot, and Chadbourn PD and other first responders will hang out with residents at the Strawberry Event Field from 6-8 p.m. National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign to promote police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie.
