WPD Charges One in Murder, Shooting

Andre Barr (CCSO Detention)

Whiteville Police have charged a man with murder and attempted murder after Friday’s shooting at Sawmill Apartments.

Andre Lionel Barr, 41, is in the county detention center under charges of murder and attempted murder, WPD Chief Paul Rockenbach said in a press release.

Patrick Deavion Shabarr Solomon,26, of Whiteville, died shortly after arrival at Columbus Regional Healthcare. The second victim, Curtis Demetrius Gowans, 37, also of Whiteville, remains in critical condition at a separate medical facility.

Police were called to Sawmill at 6:45 p.m. Friday after a report of shots fired. At the same time, they were dispatched to Columbus Regional after two men were brought in suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Gowans and Solomon were taken to the hospital by private vehicle, Rockenbach said.

Barr was taken into custody Saturday by the WPD Criminal/Narcotics Investigation Team, the chief said.

“The fast apprehension of the suspect is a testament to the outstanding capabilities and relentless effort of our Patrol and

Criminal/Narcotics Investigation Divisions,’ Rockenbach said.

He also thanked the Columbus County Sheriff’s Office for its assistance on the case.

“While we continue to work tirelessly to prevent violence in our community,” Rockenbach said, “we recognize that

despite our best efforts, senseless acts still occur. Let me be very clear; when violence strikes in

our community, we will respond swiftly, we will investigate thoroughly, and we will pursue

justice relentlessly for all victims and their families. We must continue to work together as a

community to bring safety to our city.”

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call 910.642.5111.
