Museum Celebrates 25 Years and More

The North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences at Whiteville has a big anniversary coming up and few other things to tweet about during the month of September. A fundraiser, a day of birds, and even a kid cafe is on the agenda. There is plenty of fun in stock for every one of all ages.  

25 Years of Discovery Fundraiser 

Join the Friends of the NCMNS at Whiteville for an evening of science, savories, and thoughtful exchanges to celebrate the museum’s twenty-fifth anniversary on Sept. 11. The 25 Years of Discovery fundraiser will be from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at the facility. 

Tickets are $50 each and benefits the NCMNS education and outreach work. You can purchase your ticket at www.ncmnsfriends.com or by emailing ncmnsfriends@gmail.com.  

Day of Birds 

Calling all bird lovers for a special day featuring feathered friends with Museum Ornithology Research Curator John Gerwin on Sept. 13. Join them for an experience that combines adventure, science, and a shared love of feathered friends. 

 Go on a morning bird watch at the Helms Nature Preserve, discover local birds of Eastern North Carolina, find out how wildlife-friendly coffee is produced, and view a bird’s anatomy through a dissection demonstration. 

The Day of Birds event will run from 7:30 a.m. – 4 p.m. The bird watch at the nature preserve will be on private land, and registration is required to receive the address of the meeting place. All other activities will take place at the museum.

Bird is the Word 

All the feathered fun doesn’t stop yet. The NCMNS-W is offering bird themed programs all month long. The Nature Playspace will feature pop-up sessions on Sept. 11, 20, and 25, and you can listen to captivating stories on Sept. 13 and 18 during Storytime.  

Both the pop-ups and Storytimes will begin at 10 a.m. at the museum.  

Teen Science Cafe 

The Teen Science Cafe is back and better than ever for the fall. Teens 14-18 years old and STEM experts will collaborate on presentations and hands-on activities that explore science topics in depth.  

The program is now accepting applications through Sept. 9, and the first meeting will be Sept. 17. Those interested can contact Lisa Yemma at lisa.yemma@naturalsciences.org.  

Take a Child Outside  

Head outside and have some as you and your child enjoy a week dedicated to connecting kids with nature. Take a Child Outside Day will run Sept. 23-27.  

Come to the NCMNS-W to take a shady walk on the Tree Trail, see what you can dig up in the fossil pit, or come out the Nature PlaySpace Pop-up on Sept. 25 for some crafting, skill building, and play.  

School Groups 

The school year has just begun, and if you’re planning those fall field trips, consider taking your class to the museum. The programs are designed to inspire curiosity and bring subjects to life.  

Teachers interested in bringing your group to the NCMNS-W can send an email to whiteville@naturalsciences.org or call 910.788.5100 to reserve your spot. Admission is free, and donations are greatly appreciated.
