
WHITEVILLE— Clinton overcame a 30-13 halftime lead to upset the Whiteville Wolfpack in football Friday night 37-36 in overtime.
Dustin Pike hit the game-winning extra point to give the Dark Horses (2-3) the victory. Whiteville now falls to 3-2 going into conference play.
Things started out great for the Pack as Jake Odham took the opening kickoff 85 yards into the end for a 6-0 Wolfpack lead. The PAT failed. Clinton failed to move the ball the next possession and punted back to Whiteville. Layton McLean hooked up with A.J. Monroe for a 59-yard touchdown pass to put the Wolfpack up 13-0, with Price Wheatley’s extra point.
Clinton got on the scoreboard with 3:46 left in the quarter when Jayden Williams hit Zaire Strickland from 15 yards out to make it 13-7 in favor of the Wolfpack.
In the second quarter after a Dark Horse kickoff, the Pack drove down the field for a 20-yard Price Wheatley field goal to put the Wolfpack ahead 16-7. Whiteville then took the ball on their next possession and scored with a 38-yard touchdown pass from Layton McLean to Corey Faison. Wheatley’s PAT made the score 23-7 in favor of Whiteville.
Clinton responded on the next drive with a 55-yard touchdown gallop by Miles McCallop to put Clinton closer 23-13. Layton McLean ran it into the end zone from six yards out with 30 seconds left in the half. Wheatley hit the extra point to make it 30-13 Whiteville at the half.
Whiteville started the second half driving down the field only to fumble at the Clinton 18-yard line, which Clinton capitalized on with a 82-yard drive, capped off by a two-yard touchdown by Gavin Miller. Dustin Pike hit the extra point to make the score 30-20.
In the fourth, Whiteville had an opportunity to add to their lead but missed a close field goal. Clinton would take advantage by scoring a rushing touchdown and have Dustin Pike add the extra point and a field goal later to put the game into overtime 30-30. Whiteville scored first in the overtime but failed on the extra point. Clinton scored on the next possession with Pike hitting the game winning extra point for the win 37-36.
Clinton will travel to Pender (4-0) on Oct. 3 for their East Central conference opener. Whiteville also gets a bye week. They will host West Bladen (2-3) in the Southeastern Conference opener on Oct. 3 for both teams.
