For the second time in a week, the sheriff’s office is investigating a shooting on Luben Lane near Whiteville. Paul Menser, 61, was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury late Thursday. He is alleged to have shot Gary Dean Strickland, also 61, at 26 Luben Lane. Menser was held under a secured bond. Frederick Canady was arrested September 27 after he allegedly shot and seriously injured Montorius Vereen. Canady, age 49, at the same location.

In Friday football action, The Whiteville Wolfpack chewed up the West Bladen Knights Friday, 34-7, despite a Knights rally in the second half. At Calypso, North Duplin slipped past East Bladen 15-14. West Columbus held their honor at their homecoming game, going 30-18 over East Columbus. South Columbus Stallions galloped past the Fairmont Tornadoes,  55-36.

Wesley Simkins was jailed Saturday after he allegedly struck a vehicle on Davis Avenue and left the scene of the wreck. Simkins, 63, was charged with hit and run causing property damage and driving while impaired. Simkins refused a breathalyzer, so he was held without bond. It was his second DWI arrest in less than 90 days. Simkins is program director at WTXY Radio.
