Mixed Bag for Incumbents, Challengers

 

Voters in some Columbus County municipalities will see new leaders in December, while incumbents held strong in some races Tuesday (tonight).
 
In his first challenged race since taking office in 2009, Terry Mann easily held his post as mayor of Whiteville. Mann won 367 votes to Mike Schachnuk’s 96, Brittany Payne’s 47 and Brandon Ackerman with 32.
In council district one for the city, newcomer Linda Smith received 235 votes, followed by incumbent Vickie Pait with 230. Incumbent Helen Holden came in third with 173. 
Tim Collier was unopposed in District Two, where he received 107 votes.
Mann, Collier, Smith and Pait will be sworn in at the first December meeting.
 
At Lake Waccamaw, Greg Jacobs defeated incumbent Mayor Matt Wilson, 319 to 262. Chad Smith collected 30 votes for mayor.
Lynn Hinnant defeated former Police Chief Scott Hyatt 311 to 296 for the East Ward commission seat. Curtis Andrew’s won the West Ward seat, 285 to Charlene Jacobs’ 242 and incumbent Frank Carroll’s 78.
 
Incumbent councilman Rashad Roberts comfortably led the field in Chadbourn with 188 votes. Pepper Nealy won the other open seat with 143. Incumbent Shannon Britt was third place with 117 ballots and Drew Worley, 85.
 
In Sandyfield, voters overwhelmingly approved beer, wine and on-premises alcohol sales. Beer sales received 47 yes votes and 31 no, while wine and mixed drinks were approved 45-33. Mayor Garry Keaton noted that the town has no businesses, restaurants or stores that could sell alcohol, but the council wants Sandyfield to be prepared for future growth.
 
Sandyfield also had two council seats on the ballot. Incumbents Leonard Hall and Perry Dixon were reelected, with 58 and 56 votes, respectively. Two write ins were recorded.
 
In Tabor City, Chris Fowler and Lamont Grate received 235 votes each to win the two seats on town council. Mitchell Strickland received 112, and Bryan Culberson 45.
 
Brunswick voters gave the nod for its three seats to Curtis Hill with 53 votes, Tammy Blackmon with 42, and Ricky Mason with 34. Incumbent Alonzo McAllister came in last with 31.
 
In Fair Bluff, Mayor Billy Hammond was unopposed. He won reelection with 153. There were 17 write-ins.
The three held their seats as well, with Clarice Faison at 137, Greyson James 118, and Bradley Cuttrell 116. John Phillips lost his challenge bid with 63. There were six write-ins.
 
Cerro Gordo returned four unchallenged incumbents to its board. Tracy Blackwell and Jeffrey Greene won 24 each, followed by Lisa McKee with 18 and Debra Prince with seven.
 
Bolton Mayor Shawn Maynor was unopposed, and returned to office with 95. Incumbents Danny Brown (67) and Barbara Jo Graham (54) defeated Gary Graham (40) and Kelvin Thurman (12).
 
Boardman’s mayor and five council members were unopposed. Mayor Eric Williamson received 20 votes, as did Donald Britt, Crystal Rogers, James Smith, and Minnie Turbeville. Tevis Britt received 19 votes.
 
Tonight’s totals are unofficial until Canvass Day, Nov. 14.
