Worsening drought conditions across the area have further increased the fire danger, despite scattered rain Saturday night and Sunday. Emergency officials are discouraging any outdoor burning until conditions improve.

Checkpoints across the area this weekend were not part of an Immigration and Customs Enforcement operation, officials said. The checkpoints were regular sobriety and seat belt enforcement efforts leading up to the busy holiday week.

The Atlantic basin has been more active than usual this year, but with one week left in the hurricane season, there have been no continental U.S. landfalls or Gulf storms so far this year.
