RED SPRINGS—Local high school teams participated in the Seventh Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Basketball Classic held Saturday (Jan. 17) at Red Springs High School.
In girls’ action, Whiteville defeated host team Red Springs 42-30. Ceonna Dennis led the Wolfpack with 27 points. The win pushes the Wolfpack record to 4-8 with the victory. Whiteville will travel to Fairmont (2-0, 12-1) today (Jan. 20) while Red Springs (2-12) will travel to West Bladen (1-11).
Whiteville boys fell to North Brunswick 79-77 on Saturday. The Pack led by four points late in the game but missed crucial free throws down the stretch. Ty’Lae Rose scored 30 points in the loss while teammate Trayvionne Williams added 14 points and six steals.
The Wolfpack (6-7) will travel to Fairmont (5-9) today for a Southeastern Conference battle. MJ Smith had 23 points for the Scorpions. North Brunswick (13-3) will go to Hoggard (11-5).
East Columbus boys squandered a 14-point lead only to regroup for the win over host squad Red Springs 52-46 Saturday.
The Gators (6-6) led 30-16 with 5:35 left in the third quarter only to have the Red Devils tie the game at 41-41 with 3:05 left in the game. KJ Thurman led East Columbus with 13 points. The Gators will travel to East Bladen (3-2, 3-11) today.
Red Springs (3-11) got 12 points from Khalif Brown in the defeat. The Red Devils will travel to Dublin to face West Bladen (2-0, 10-5) today.
West Columbus boys fell 55-46 to St. Pauls Saturday in the MLK Classic. The Vikings (6-9) will get back into action on Wednesday when they travel to West Bladen (10-5). St. Pauls (2-10) will host EE Smith (9-3) today.
