Two students face juvenile petitions after they allegedly tampered with electrical equipment in a classroom Tuesday.

The West Columbus High school resource officer was notified by a substitute teacher that several students were seen near a light socket moments before a computer went off, according to the report. A piece of wire that was bent into a U-shaped and covered in paper was found near the burned-out socket.

“Multiple student statements indicated that two students were involved in inserting the wire into the socket repeatedly, resulting in the damage,” the report said. One of the students has a prior similar incident in another classroom earlier in the school year. In that case a breaker tripped. The male students are ages 16 and 14, the report said.

Juvenile petitions are being sought on two students for destruction of government property and attempted burning of schoolhouse.

The sheriff’s office said no further details will be released due to the suspects being underage.
