Area Girls’ Basketball Roundup: Pack, Gators Win; Knights Win Third Straight

Whiteville 61, Red Springs 37

WHITEVILLE—Whiteville held Red Springs scoreless in the second quarter on their way to a 61-37 victory.

Jashai Robbs led the Wolfpack with 25 points in the win. Ceonna Dennis added 12 points for the Pack. Whiteville moves to 2-2 on the Southeastern Conference and 5-9 overall. The Wolfpack will host South Columbus (1-3, 3-12) on Tuesday. Red Springs fall to 0-4 in the conference and 2-15 on the year. The Red Devils will host Fairmont (4-0, 17-1) Tuesday.

East Columbus 45, North Duplin 29

LAKE WACCAMAW—East Columbus used its strong defense to take down conference leader North Duplin on Friday night 45-29.

The Gators held the Rebels (6-1, 13-4) to single digits in three of the four quarters, which is a nightmare in high school basketball. Malia Graham had her usual strong game, scoring 21 points, snatching 16 rebounds, and dishing out five assists. Aleigh Goodwin chipped in 11 points for the Gators, who moved into a tie for the conference lead with North Duplin with a 6-1 Carolina Conference and 10-4 on the season. The Gators host county rival Whiteville (5-9) on Thursday. North Duplin will host Union (3-4, 9-8) on Tuesday in a Carolina Conference tilt.

West Bladen 38, South Columbus 35

TABOR CITY—West Bladen saw a 11-point lead shrink to two only to hang on for their third straight win with a 38-35 victory over South Columbus.

The Stallions cut the Knight lead to 37-25 with 37 seconds on the clock but had to foul. Haley Taylor added a free throw to secure the victory. The victory raises the Knights record to 2-2 in the Southeastern Conference and 4-11 overall. Kali Allen led West Bladen with 11 points in the victory.

The Knights will travel to South Brunswick (3-1, 10-2) on Tuesday. South Columbus (1-3, 3-12) will travel to Fairmont (4-0, 17-1) on Tuesday to face the Tornadoes.

CERRO GORDO—Union defeated West Columbus in girls’ basketball on Tuesday night 69-32.

Demeya Powell led the Vikings 14 points and 22 rebounds in the loss. West Columbus (1-6, 1-12) will travel to Salemburg to face Lakewood (4-3, 10-7) on Tuesday. Union (3-4, 9-8) will host North Duplin (6-1, 13-4) on Tuesday.
